Based in San Diego, California, the company was founded in 2010 by Brad Damphousse and Andrew Ballester under the name “CreateAFund”. The name was later changed, and in 2015, both co-founders stepped down from the company’s day-to-day operations after selling most of their shares to an investor group led by Accel Partners and Technology Crossover Ventures. This amazing platform has not only grow amazingly over the past 7-years, it has also inspired other crowdfunding sites to pop up and help others in need.
Users contribute around US$100 million in donations each month towards various causes. We have been fortunate to have been able to contribute to projects such as – assisting those less fortunate in the poverty stricken areas of Togo in Africa, helping a beautiful single mum facing stage 4 metastisized breast cancer alleviate her financial strains, and contributing towards an education fund for children of someone who had lost his battle with mental illness. Without the great work being done at GoFundMe, without its conception, we might never have found out about these stories and might never have known how we could help.
As a society, we rely on each other to simply get through life. We all need to together and help each other where we can. Even if all we can do is send a message telling someone that we hope they get better soon and that we’re thinking of them, we have helped and potentially made someone’s life a little better. Never discount the smallest act of kindness. Who knows, you might be the one needed help one day.
